Choosing the Right Splashback for Your Kitchen Design

The key to designing a perfect kitchen is to consider the overall look you want and also everything you need to achieve this finish. When you think of everything you’ll require for a new kitchen, large items such as worktops, flooring and units are likely to spring to mind. However, it can be the smaller features which really bring the room together. For example, choosing the right splashback for your kitchen can have a huge effect on the overall design. Check out your guide to choosing the right splashbacks below.

What are splashbacks?

Splashbacks are designed to protect your walls from moisture and spills from cooking whilst adding an attractive feature to your kitchen. They are often tiled but can be made from a whole range of wipe clean surfaces. Splashbacks are usually fitted as an extension of your work surfaces and also next to cookers and sinks.

What types of materials are available?

The good news is that splashbacks are no longer just limited to ceramic tiles so whatever kitchen design you have, there’s bound to be a suitable option for you. Glass is a popular choice for splashbacks as it’s easy to maintain with a quick wipe and polish and has the added bonus over tiles that there are no seams and joins to attract dirt and mould. You should invest in toughened glass to ensure the surface is strong enough in case you accidently bang it. The great advantage of glass over most other materials is that it can come in a whole range of colours.

Wood splashbacks look great but they do need higher levels of maintenance so they are protected from moisture. Oiling regularly will help to seal the wood and prevent staining from spillages.

Stainless steel is a good choice for contemporary kitchens although if you have a particularly large kitchen it can sometimes make the area look too clinical. The main benefit of stainless steel splashbacks is that it’s hard wearing and non porous so it will last for many years.

Corian is a man-made material which has been developed to provide the ideal surface for kitchens. It’s non porous and stain resistant and can be easily moulded to any shape. Corian is generally more expensive than the other options but you will be getting great value for money if you invest in this material.

Natural stone can complement both contemporary and traditional kitchens so is a great all round choice for splashbacks. Granite and quartz are classic choices and they tend to be easier to maintain than sandstone and marble.

Buying your splashback

Before you invest in your splashback make sure you choose the right style for your kitchen by asking for a sample of your favourite colour or material so you can see how it complements the rest of the room. It’s wise to invest in made to measure splashbacks as these will include the appropriate cut outs for sockets which will give you a seamless finish.  If you’re looking for a cheaper option then stainless steel and some glass panels are available pre-cut so you can simply slot the panels into place.

Splashbacks can create a real style statement in your home so consider opting for a whole new look with the practical, stylish and hygienic options above.
