How To Reduce Your Home Refrigerator Power Consumption
How much money do you pay for electricity at home? A part from our bank mortgage, the money we pay for power is one of our largest household expenses.
Where does most of the energy go? The main consumption of energy goes to the heating and air conditioning unit. Next, it is the home refrigerator which is consuming the most power.
Our fridge is left running all the time. We do not switch it off unless for servicing or repair works. To keep the fridge cold, a lot of power is used to run the compressor motor. Therefore, any measure we take to increase the efficiency of the refrigerator will reduce our monthly utility bill substantially.
The following are 4 easy ways we can take to reduce power consumption.
1) Using the ice dispenser – Some fridges come with a build in ice dispenser, try using it more often. Having a cold drink during hot summer days is very refreshing.
When you use the dispenser, you don’t have to open the fridge door and letting cold air out. When that happens, less power is used for re-cooling hence saving you money.
2) Adjust the temperature up – Try doing an experiment with this procedure. Turn up the temperature 1 degree upwards at a time and observe the results.
By turning the temperature slightly higher, it will make a big difference in cost. Check the quality of your food in the fridge. If it stays in good condition, maintain the temperature setting.
3) Service the cooling coil – How often do you clean the coil of the fridge? The function of the cooling coil is to remove heat.
Since it is located outside the unit, it tends to gather dust and dirt which will make it less efficient. The compressor would have to work harder and longer to get the heat out of the coil.
4) Upgrade your kitchen appliance – If your refrigerator has aged, it may be a good idea to buy a new one. Old electrical appliances use more energy because of worn out parts. It would make more economic sense to invest in a new fridge with modern design that has a good “energy efficiency” rating. Invest in a new appliance because it is much cheaper to run in the long run.
