Kitchen for the Information Age

Let’s face it; we spend an awful lot of time in our kitchens. We have spent money to make it look appealing and upgrade our appliances with sleek up-to-date designs. What’s next?

Well, you may have found that in all your remodeling work you failed to account for some of the items that your enjoy the most; for example cable TV and a hard-wired internet connection. Here are some tips to get you on your way.

First of all, this is probably going to require more counter space and more outlets. Since counter space is often at a premium, a great way to take advantage of what you have is to install recessed receptacle boxes. These space savers let you push small appliances against the wall. The boxes even allow for a small TV or computer monitor to be wall-mounted.

A particular model that can help with your need is an Arlington DVFR2W. This recessed box contains a divider that allow for dual installation of power and low-voltage (signal) cables. You must install a box that has a UL listing for dual installation when running both types of cables into it. By doing the installation yourself will result in a code violation. Furthermore, stay away from long parallel runs of low-voltage and power cables. This will help you to avoid signal interference. Also, space them well apart preferably at least 3 inches between the two cables.

For the outlet, opt for a high-quality ground fault circuit interrupted (GFCI). For safety purposes you can find a device that, unless properly wired, will not transmit power. For an added cost of about $3, it is worth it for the peace of mind.

Finally, you do not want to make a mess of your data and communications wiring system. Begin by installing a simple distribution panel of Ethernet with eight-ports. The key is not to overdo it. Get something with just enough outputs to handle what you need now and in the future. First, install it and your cable or DSL modem in a main locale and then have your cables routed to where they are needed.
